HERKIMER, NY β What looked like a minor situation on the surface ended up hitting a nerve across the Mohawk Valley.
According to reports, someone called police after spotting a homeless individual going through garbage behind Walgreens on South Caroline Street in Herkimer. No violence. No threat. Just someone digging for what they could find.
But when that story hit social media, the reaction wasnβt quiet β not even close.
Instead, it opened the floodgates.
Some people questioned why police were even called in the first place. Others said itβs a sign the situation has gotten out of hand. And then there were those who went even further, pointing at what they believe is a much bigger problem brewing in Herkimer.
One commenter didnβt hold back, saying the county has some of the highest property taxes in the state while also dealing with a growing poverty problem. Another pointed out the lack of jobs and opportunities, saying people are running out of options.
And then came the issue that kept popping up again and again β housing.
Multiple people claimed there simply isnβt anywhere for people to go. Shelters are limited, rentals are scarce, and even those trying to get back on their feet are struggling to find a place to land.
Others pushed back, saying people need accountability, structure, and better systems in place β not just sympathy.
But hereβs the part nobody can ignoreβ¦
Nobody in that entire conversation said this situation was normal.
Because itβs not.
Whether you see it as a failure of the system, a lack of resources, or something deeper, one thing is clear β this wasnβt just about someone behind a store. This was about whatβs happening across the community.
And maybe the real story here isnβt the call that was madeβ¦
Itβs the fact that people arenβt surprised it happened at all.
TVOTT Hillbilly News reached out to the community to weigh in β and the responses made one thing loud and clear:
People are paying attention now.
The question is⦠what happens next?
