Residents in parts of Newport were left shaken after flashing lights and police activity filled the area near Norway Street and East Street on the night of May 4. According to New York State Police, troopers were called around 9:23 p.m. after reports of a vehicle allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed through the neighborhood. What followed, police say, quickly escalated into a confrontation between residents and the vehicle occupants.

According to State Police, investigators determined that residents confronted the driver about the alleged speeding concerns before a physical altercation broke out. Police allege that 21-year-old Izayah J. Przelski of Newport exited the vehicle and struck a female victim in the head with a closed fist, causing injury. Troopers also stated that a male victim was placed in fear of physical injury during the confrontation. Further investigation reportedly determined that 19-year-old Michael T. Anderson of Poland allegedly damaged the female victim’s cellphone during the incident.

Przelski was charged with Assault in the 3rd Degree and Menacing in the 3rd Degree. Police say he was arrested May 8, processed at SP Herkimer, arraigned in Town of German Flatts Court, and released on his own recognizance pending a court appearance in Newport. Anderson was charged with Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree along with a violation ticket. State Police say he was arrested May 6 and later released pending a future court appearance.

The incident has sparked wider conversations throughout the area about speeding complaints in residential neighborhoods and concerns about confrontations between frustrated residents and drivers. Some community members say they understand why neighbors speak up when they believe roads are becoming dangerous, while others warn that situations can become unpredictable and dangerous very quickly.

Do residents deserve safer roads and stronger enforcement when speeding complaints continue building up in neighborhoods? Should situations like this be handled differently before they escalate into violence? Those are the kinds of questions many locals are now debating online following the arrests.
