According to troopers, investigators responded to a residence on Summit Street in the Town of Prospect on May 13, 2026 after receiving reports connected to a domestic incident that allegedly occurred earlier in the month. State Police say the investigation later determined that on May 4, 2026 at approximately 10:00 a.m., a domestic dispute allegedly took place involving a female victim and the suspect.

People across the area are now learning more disturbing details tied to the case. According to investigators, the suspect allegedly assaulted and physically restrained the victim during the incident. Troopers also stated the victim later sought medical attention for injuries reportedly sustained during the alleged altercation.

Police further stated the victim reported damage to her vehicle and alleged statements made by the suspect that caused her to fear for her safety.

During the investigation, New York State Police say a voluntary consent search of the residence was conducted. Authorities reported discovering numerous legally owned firearms including pistols and shotguns, along with what troopers described as two illegal AR-style rifles. Police stated the weapons were secured pending further investigation.

Authorities identified the suspect as William B. Straite, 66, of Rome, New York. Straite was charged with:

  • Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation
  • Assault in the Second Degree (Felony)
  • Menacing in the Second Degree
  • Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree
  • Two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree

According to State Police, Straite was transported to the Oneida County Correctional Facility to await CAP Court arraignment.

For many in the Mohawk Valley, cases involving allegations of domestic violence combined with firearms immediately raise concerns about public safety and how situations like these can escalate behind closed doors. Others online are already questioning whether additional charges could follow as investigators continue reviewing the evidence recovered from the residence.
