Concern and questions continue spreading throughout the Mohawk Valley after emergency responders and investigators were called to Marcy Correctional Facility following a violent incident that ultimately left one incarcerated man dead. News of the incident has sparked discussion online about prison safety, transparency, and what exactly happened inside the facility that night.
According to the New York State Police, correction staff discovered Terry Demonstoy, age 45, unconscious in a bathroom at approximately 11:55 p.m. on May 15, 2026, with significant injuries. Officials stated Demonstoy was transported to Wynn Hospital where he was treated in the intensive care unit while on a ventilator. Authorities later confirmed he was legally pronounced deceased on May 18, 2026, at 3:18 p.m.
Investigators currently believe the injuries may have been sustained during an altercation involving another incarcerated individual, though officials have not publicly released additional details regarding exactly what led up to the incident. An autopsy through the Onondaga County Medical Examinerβs Office was scheduled for May 21 as investigators continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the death.
Cases involving deaths while someone is in custody often draw major public attention because many families and residents believe transparency matters in situations where someone cannot simply walk away from danger or seek help on their own. Incidents like this also raise broader questions about inmate safety, supervision, emergency response inside correctional facilities, and whether enough information is being shared with the public.
Now many are asking:
Should more information be released publicly?
Do families deserve faster answers in cases involving deaths in custody?
What protections are in place inside correctional facilities when violent incidents happen?
The New York State Attorney Generalβs Office now has jurisdiction over the investigation under New York Executive Law Section 70-b, which covers deaths occurring while individuals are in custody or situations involving possible acts or omissions by police or peace officers.
At this time, the investigation remains active and ongoing.
