For many people in Gloversville, the missing church bell has become one of those local mysteries that never completely faded away.

Some residents remember hearing about it years ago and moving on. Others still quietly ask the same question today:

How does a bell weighing over a ton simply disappear?

The historic bell came from the former First Baptist Church on South Main Street in Gloversville, a property that had previously been demolished. According to reports from that time period, the bell had been stored at a location tied to city operations while plans were discussed regarding its preservation and possible placement with the Fulton County Museum.

But somewhere along the way, the bell vanished.

TVOTT Hillbilly News recently reached out directly to former Gloversville Mayor Dayton King regarding the incident and the city’s handling of the situation at the time.

In his response, King stated that the disappearance of the bell was taken seriously and confirmed that the storage area was associated with municipal operations tied to demolition and DPW-related activities.

King also acknowledged that moving a bell of that size would likely have required heavy equipment.

“A bell of that size certainly would not have been easy to move casually,” King stated.

According to King, police investigated the disappearance and questioned city personnel and others with potential access to the storage area. However, he said no conclusive determination was ever made regarding what happened to the bell or who may have removed it.

One statement in particular now raises even more questions.

King stated that there was concern at the time that whoever removed the bell likely had familiarity with the location and understood what was stored there.

That statement alone is likely to fuel new discussion throughout the community.

Because many residents are now asking:

Was this truly a random theft?

Or did someone with knowledge of municipal operations know exactly where the bell was being stored?

At this time, there is no public evidence directly accusing any specific individual, and TVOTT Hillbilly News is not making allegations against anyone. However, the unanswered questions surrounding the disappearance continue to draw public interest because of the size, historical significance, and circumstances surrounding the bell.

King also acknowledged that municipal inventory and storage tracking systems at the time were not as advanced or standardized as they are today. He stated that stronger inventory controls, secured storage, restricted access logs, and better documentation should have existed surrounding historically significant municipal property.

Now, TVOTT Hillbilly News is preparing to file FOIL requests seeking additional records connected to the case, including:

  • Police reports
  • Municipal inventory records
  • Storage documentation
  • Demolition-related records
  • Possible chain-of-custody information
  • Insurance records
  • Internal city communications if available

Additional interviews with former officials, investigators, DPW personnel, and others connected to the situation may also be pursued as this investigation continues.

For many in the community, this is no longer just about a missing bell.

It is about transparency, accountability, historical preservation, and whether important public property was properly protected.

Residents across Gloversville continue asking the same questions over a decade later:

Could this mystery have been prevented?

Were enough safeguards in place?

And does somebody out there still know exactly what happened to the missing church bell?
